The Minister of Science has awarded scholarships to outstanding young scientists in various disciplines. How much money was allocated and how much will the scholarship holders receive?

The Minister of Science of Poland has awarded scholarships to 228 outstanding young scientists, including 32 doctoral students, 37 postgraduate students and representatives of other categories. The scholarship holders represent 53 scientific and artistic fields. Candidates for the scholarships were recommended by university rectors, directors of institutes of the Polish Academy of Sciences, as well as heads of scientific and international research institutions.
Selection of applications and competition
A total of 1708 applications were received for the scholarship competition. The advisory group reviewed the applications using a point system, evaluating them in various scientific and artistic disciplines.
The selection of the scholarship recipients was based on an approach that ensured equality of scientific and artistic disciplines. Each discipline was awarded the same number of scholarships, allowing young scientists to compete within their own specialisation rather than across the entire field. A maximum of five scholarships could be awarded for each discipline, including one for doctoral students. However, in disciplines with higher numbers of applications, more than five scholarships were awarded due to the levelling of the playing field. This means that scholarships that remained free in one discipline could be reallocated to other disciplines within the same field. Thus, more popular disciplines had the opportunity to receive a larger number of scholarships.
Funding and amount of scholarships
The government has allocated over PLN 44 million for scholarships. The winners of the competition will receive scholarships for 3 years in the amount of 5390 PLN.
The leading universities in terms of the number of scholarships:
- University of Warsaw – 26 scholarships.
- Jagiellonian University – 16 scholarships.
- Silesian University of Technology – 9 scholarships.
- University of Gdańsk – 8 scholarships.
- Wroclaw University of Science and Technology – 6 scholarships.
Participation in conferences, publication of articles and cooperation with researchers contribute to the professional growth of young scientists, exchange of experience and progress in science. Being active in the scientific community increases their chances of receiving scholarships and various support programmes, demonstrating their commitment and competence. It also facilitates the development of professional relationships necessary for the further development of research and teaching careers.
