In today's scientific world, medicine and biology are developing at an extremely rapid pace. It is important for scientists, doctors, and students to have access to verified and up-to-date research. This is precisely why PubMed exists – an international database that brings together millions of scientific articles, peer-reviewed journals and reviews. It has become one of the main tools for searching for knowledge in the field of medical sciences, as it allows you to find verified information, track the latest discoveries and form a reliable evidence base for practice and research.

What is the PubMed database?
PubMed is an open and free search engine that provides access to a huge number of scientific publications in the fields of medicine, biology and related sciences.
The platform is operated by the National Centre for Biotechnology Information (NCBI), which is part of the US National Library of Medicine (NLM). Thanks to its reliability, scale and user-friendly interface, PubMed is an indispensable tool for scientists, doctors, teachers and students around the world.
PubMed contains over 37 million citations and abstracts from biomedical and biological literature. The database allows you to quickly find peer-reviewed articles, clinical studies, literature reviews, and the latest scientific discoveries that form the basis of evidence-based medicine and contribute to the development of modern science and practice.
PubMed structure
The citation information contained in PubMed is derived from three main sources, each of which plays a specific role in scientific communication:
1. MEDLINE
MEDLINE is the primary bibliographic database containing citations and abstracts from leading medical and biological journals. A distinctive feature of MEDLINE is its use of the Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) system developed by the US National Library of Medicine (NLM).
This ensures accurate and standardised indexing of articles, which greatly simplifies searching by key categories and topics.
MEDLINE contains over 28 million references to journal articles dating back to 1966. It indexes over 5,000 life science journals, with a primary focus or concentration on biomedicine and health sciences.
2. PubMed Central (PMC)
PubMed Central is a digital archive that provides free access to full-text scientific publications and contains over 6 million full-text articles. It covers both current articles from peer-reviewed journals and historical materials.
In addition, PMC stores works created as part of government research, in accordance with the open access policy of the US National Institutes of Health (NIH) and other science funding organisations. In this way, PMC promotes research transparency and provides free access to results obtained with public funds.
3. Bookshelf
Bookshelf is an electronic resource containing full texts of scientific books, monographs, textbooks, reports, and basic reference materials in the fields of biomedicine, health care, and life sciences. This source is an important supplement to articles and reviews, as it provides users with a deeper theoretical and methodological foundation for their research.
Non-indexed PubMed materials:
- Records in process. Articles that will eventually be indexed for MEDLINE, but full indexing has not yet been completed. Until then, PubMed displays basic or ‘skeleton’ records, which are subsequently supplemented with all necessary data.
- Out-of-scope records. Articles published in journals included in MEDLINE, but whose subject matter does not match the database profile. For example, only articles on medicine may be indexed in a multidisciplinary scientific journal, while materials on geology or physics are not included in MEDLINE.
- Records from PubMed Central (PMC). Materials available in the PMC full-text archive but published in journals that are not indexed by MEDLINE. A basic record is created for such articles in PubMed, but they are never indexed by MEDLINE.
Key features of PubMed
- Open access. A significant portion of the materials in PubMed are available to read for free thanks to integration with PubMed Central (PMC). In addition, many publications provide direct links to publishers' websites, allowing you to quickly find both open and paid resources.
- Advanced search capabilities. The system offers flexible tools for refining queries. In particular, it uses medical subject headings (MeSH), logical operators, and filters by date, publication type, and language. This makes searching not only fast but also as accurate as possible, which is especially important for researchers and doctors looking for specific scientific data.
- Regular updates. The database is constantly updated with new publications, including the latest articles from peer-reviewed journals and the results of current research. This guarantees users access to the most recent scientific information.
- Reliability and authority. All sources presented in PubMed are carefully selected and verified, which ensures a high level of trust in the materials presented.
- Global coverage. PubMed covers publications from around the world, allowing you to track international scientific discourse and compare research results in different countries.
How to use PubMed?
- Simple search: enter keywords, author names or journal titles in the search bar to quickly get relevant results.
- Advanced search: apply filters by publication date, language, article type, and other criteria for more accurate literature selection.
- Using MeSH: use medical subject headings (MeSH) to provide standardised searching by terms.
- Access to full texts: select articles marked ‘Free PMC Article’ or open them through institutional subscriptions of universities or medical institutions.
Please note that although the database itself is free, not all materials in PubMed are freely accessible — some articles require a subscription. In addition, the platform is primarily focused on biomedical and biological sciences, which may limit its use for interdisciplinary research to a certain extent.
Advantages of publishing in PubMed journals
- High visibility of results. Articles indexed in PubMed become available to an international audience and are quickly disseminated among scientists.
- Authority and prestige. Publication in PubMed journals demonstrates compliance with scientific standards and increases trust in the author and their institution.
- Citation and scientometrics. Works published in PubMed publications are cited more often, which contributes to the growth of the Hirsch index, citation rate, and other scientometric indicators.
- Opportunities for collaboration. Researchers whose work is available on PubMed are more likely to receive invitations to international scientific projects, conferences, and partnerships.
- Support for evidence-based medicine. Publications in this database contribute to the development of high-quality scientific and clinical practice, which is especially important for doctors and the overall development of medicine.
