On 19 February, Polish scientists celebrate Polish Science Day. The holiday was established in 2020 by the Sejm of the Republic of Poland to honour scientists whose discoveries have had a significant impact on Poland’s intellectual, social and economic development. In our article, we will tell you more about this holiday and about what gift the company Scientific Publications has prepared for you.

The authority of Polish scientists
Polish Science Day was established on 19 February not by chance, since this event coincides with the birthday of an outstanding Polish scientist in the field of astronomy – Nicolaus Copernicus, who completely changed the course of science with his heliocentric theory. Despite difficult historical circumstances (wars, partitions, occupations), Polish scientists continued to contribute to the development of global science.
Among the most outstanding figures, the following should be highlighted:
- Marie Skłodowska-Curie – a pioneer of radioactivity research, a two-time Nobel Prize laureate
- Jan Heweliusz – an outstanding astronomer, designer of astronomical instruments
- Ignacy Łukasiewicz – inventor of the kerosene lamp and a pioneer of the oil industry
- Karol Olszewski – co-author of the world’s first sample of liquefied oxygen
- Ludwik Hirszfeld – a pioneer of immunology and the creator of the classification of blood groups
- Stefan Banach – one of the most outstanding mathematicians of the twentieth century, co-founder of functional analysis
The achievements of these scientists became an inspiration for the following generations, made a significant contribution to the global development of science and helped change society’s understanding of new knowledge and technologies.
Astronomy is one of the leading fields of Polish science
Astronomy is one of the strongest areas of Polish scientists. This can be seen directly in the research of astronomers and in the work of Polish engineers who are involved in space exploration. At present, two Polish astronauts have been in space. The first was General Mirosław Hermaszewski, who on 27 June 1978 took part in the Soyuz 30–Salyut 6 mission and spent 190 hours and 3 minutes in outer space. The second astronaut was Sławosz Uznański-Wiśniewski, who is also the first Polish astronaut to have been on board the International Space Station. He took part in the Axiom 4 mission, which began on 25 June 2025, and the return to Earth took place on 15 July 2025.
Modern Polish science
Today, Polish scientists continue to achieve success on the global stage. Research teams are actively working on modern technologies in the field of renewable energy, medicine, computer science and nanotechnology. In particular, innovative perovskite-based photovoltaic cells have been developed, which could revolutionise the production of solar energy.
In addition, Polish engineers are conducting progressive research on graphene, opening up unique possibilities in the field of electronics and telecommunications. In biotechnology and medicine, new gene therapies and technologies are being developed that allow tissue regeneration and could change the way many diseases are treated.
This is proof that Polish scientists not only draw on a rich heritage but also actively contribute to the development of global technologies and innovations.
